The cultural center in the Spanish city of Aviles was designed by the legendary modernist architect Oscar Niemeyer and was named in his honor.
The futuristic building made of white concrete in the form of a dome is an exhibition space, where you can see the works of the most interesting contemporary artists and photographers. The observation tower with a height of 20 meters can be reached by an external spiral staircase or by an elevator, which offers spectacular views of the industrial capital of Asturias. The central square unites a complex of buildings, it accommodates up to ten thousand people, so it is often used for musical concerts and festivals, theater performances and other mass cultural events.
Oscar Niemeyer Center looks more like a children's playground than the museum complex: each of the five buildings is characterized by the bizarre shape and bright colors of the facades. The cultural center in Aviles is the only colorful building in the long career of the Brazilian architect not by accident - the complex was to become a kind of remedy for depression for the inhabitants of a small industrial town. Aviles for a long time was associated only with smoking pipes of steel mills, which is why the Prince of Asturias Fund decided to give the city a bright exhibition complex.
